  1. HP-UX SNAplusRJE, Technical Data
  2.    For HP 9000 Series 300, 400, 700, and 800 Computer Systems
  3. Product Numbers J2234A, J2228A, J2222A
  4. HP-UX SNAplusRJE is a software product that provides batch data transfer
  5. between an HP 9000 Series 300, 400, 700 or 800 computer and an IBM
  6. System/370-compatible mainframe, in a System Network Architecture (SNA)
  7. environment.  The HP 9000 running SNAplusRJE emulates a standard subset
  8. of capabilities of the IBM 3770 terminal.

  12. The HP-UX SNAplusRJE product is available in two configurations:
  13. stand-alone and client/server.  The stand-alone configuration provides
  14. IBM mainframe access for a single HP-UX computer which has its own HP-UX
  15. SNAplusLink.  The client/server configuration permits access to the IBM
  16. mainframe from multiple HP-UX computers on an Ethernet or Token Ring
  17. LAN.  These computers generally use a single HP 9000 computer with the
  18. HP-UX SNAplusLink as a server to access the IBM mainframe.
  19.    The HP-UX SNAplusLink provides the major features of an IBM 3274
  20. cluster control unit and the lower four levels of SNA.  Physical Unit
  21. Type 2 and 2.1 (PU2 and PU2.1) are emulated, Logical Unit Types 0, 1, 2,
  22. 3, and 6.2 (LU0, LU1, LU2, LU3, LU6.2) are supported.

  25. o Communications with MVS/JES2 (Multiple Virtual Storage/Job Entry
  26.   Subsystem) MVS/JES3 and VSE/Power (Virtual Storage Extended).
  27. o Jobs can be submitted to the host through a script file and output can
  28.   be directed to a file, directory or, user program.
  29. o Host output can be routed to a disk file or piped as standard input to
  30.   a program or shell script for processing.
  31. o Immediate or time-deferred job submission.
  32. o Host console commands can be sent and host console data can be
  33.   received interleaved with file transmission or receipt.
  34. o Notification of output via mail or message to the user's terminal.
  35. o The RJE process runs in the background.  Uses a simple send command to
  36.   initiate a transmission.  The background process will accept data from
  37.   the host without user intervention.
  38. o Security * access can be restricted to a group of users.
  39. o Multiple RJE workstations can be configured on a single SNAplusRJE
  40.   system to provide different RJE configurations for different groups of
  41.   users.
  42. o Jobs submitted for a remote system are queued locally on a spool
  43.   before being sent to the remote system.
  44. o Up to 9 printer and 9 punch output devices may be configured for each
  45.   RJE workstation.
  46. o A full-screen console program allows you to view host system console
  47.   information for an RJE workstation and to issue commands to JES.
  48. o PDIRs (Peripheral Data Information Records) are accepted from the
  49.   host.
  50. o ASCII to EBCDIC code conversion is supported.
  51. o Exchange data support allows data to be sent and received as 128-byte
  52.   records.
  53. o Inbound and outbound compression
  54. o Up to 5 LUs on the same host connection may be configured for each RJE
  55.   workstation.
  56. o A device can be configured to send output to the RJEUSR or RJEUSRPAD
  57.   programs which routes output according to a USR card specification.
  58. o Supports printer forms control by SNA Character Strings (SCS) or using
  59.   Forms Control Blocks (FCBs)
  60. o Data stream profile 0 or 1 is supported.

  62. Functional Specifications
  63. All printers and terminals supported by the HP 9000 Series 300, 400, 700
  64. and 800 running HP-UX are supported by HP-UX SNAplusRJE.
  65.    The SNAplusRJE user interface has commands for submitting a job,
  66. displaying job queue and workstation status, and sending and receiving
  67. console commands (see table of user commands on next page).  These
  68. commands can be used interactively.  The HP 9000 will concurrently
  69. process user applications and data communications with an IBM mainframe.
  70.    SNAplusRJE runs in the background.  As a result, jobs may be queued
  71. or status may be checked at any time.  Jobs submitted to the host are
  72. held in a transmission queue and automatically sent to the host when a
  73. session is established.  Output from the host can be received at any
  74. time a host session is active, even when the user has logged off.
  75.    Post-processor support allows the user to send host, printer, and
  76. punch output to a variety of destinations.  At the time of submittal,
  77. users have the flexibility of routing host output to a disk file or a
  78. user program.
  79.    Using SNAplusRJE and a high-speed printer, an HP 9000 can be used as
  80. a remote print station for an IBM host.  This is an effective way for
  81. users at remote sites to print large reports from IBM hosts.
  82.    SNAplusRJE does not require a dedicated processor.  Concurrently,
  83. while reports are being received, the HP 9000 can be used for other
  84. tasks, such as another session with an IBM host or program development.
  85.    SNAplusRJE can be used to access or update databases.  SNAplusRJE may
  86. be used to transmit large files to a centralized database and then to
  87. periodically receive an updated copy of the entire database or portions
  88. of it.
  89.    With SNAplusRJE and SNAplus3270 sharing an SNAplusLink, users have
  90. the capability of both batch and interactive communications.  This
  91. allows programmers to do development work using SNAplus3270 and then run
  92. larger batch jobs with SNAplusRJE.
  93.    Files can be sent and received in binary mode.  Translation between
  94. ASCII and EBCDIC is not done, allowing transmission of binary data such
  95. as graphics data files.
  96. Printer output may be formatted using Forms Control Blocks (FCBs)
  97. defined at the host and specified in the outbound data using the PDIR,
  98. or defined locally and selected by user command or from the host.
  99. Printer output may also be formatted by SCS codes.

  170. Customer Installation Responsibility
  171. Installation of these products requires knowledge in several overlapping
  172. areas.  The staff engineer responsible for this task must have strong
  173. knowledge of (or have direct contact with staff with strong knowledge
  174. of):  SNA networks, application environments, and HP-UX system
  175. administration.
  176.    Installation requires basic SNA knowledge.  This includes knowledge
  177. of interface nodes, network routers, NAUs, PUs, LUs, link types, IBM
  178. hardware and software.
  179.    The installer must understand why the SNAplus products are being
  180. installed, how the users are going to use SNAplus and how SNAplus fits
  181. into the network solution.
  182.    Installation of SNAplus requires a thorough user-level knowledge of
  183. HP-UX commands.  In addition, the installer must be familiar with:
  184.   - running update on an HP-UX system
  185.   - running SAM (in order to add users)
  186.   - the HP-UX file system, privilege groups, and real-time features
  187.   - running LAN and PSI diagnostics on an HP-UX system
  188.   - HP-UX kernel configuration
  189. Customers who cannot compose a team with this skill set should purchase
  190. HP Installation and Network Startup services.

  192. Additional Implementation Assistance
  193. For implementation needs that go beyond installation, the customer can
  194. either provide self-support, or can purchase additional services from
  195. HP.  These services include Network Startup and HP ConsultLine.  In
  196. addition, the customer can also purchase service from HP on a
  197. time-and-materials basis.
  198.    Network Startup includes implementation scheduling and coordination
  199. assistance, network configuration and verification testing, and network
  200. documentation.

  202. Ordering Information
  203. HP-UX SNAplusRJE includes right-to-use license and software.  For
  204. Series 300, 400, and 700, customer must specify software version option
  205. and a media option, and for the Series 800, a processor option.
  206.    HP-UX SNAplusRJE requires HP STREAMS/UX for Series 300, 400, 700, and
  207. 800 running HP-UX 9.0.

  240. HP-UX SNAplusRJE requires previous installation of HP-UX SNAplusLink
  241. (J2220A or J2226A) on the stand-alone or server system.
  242.    The software which the customer orders contains both the stand-alone
  243. and client/server configuration software.  During installation, the
  244. customer chooses which configuration is required.
  245.    Upgrade options are available for Series 800 SNAplus products.
